“No man ever steps in the same river twice. For it is not the same river and he is not the same man.”
The True Self vs The Authentic Self
As we go through our daily lives, whether we realize it or not we are all handed a script. This script tells us to act a certain way. It tells us to follow a certain path in life. This being go to school, a 9-5 job, get married, have kids, then retire. It also tells us how to act around people. This script is important because it keeps our society in order. Although, it also has drawbacks, the main one being that it dilutes the ‘self’. This person I mentioned above is a huge generalization and is created to fit as many people as possible. However, you can say it fails to fit anybody perfectly. The perfect fit is somewhere out there and you have to find it yourself. It takes a lot of courage to find your own path in life. But the rewards are true happiness and self-actualization. Its important to realize that this script that society handed you is not you. You might resonate with some of the qualities in the script but its ultimately not you. The self is mainly broken up into the true self and the authentic self and its important to know the difference.
What Is The True Self
The true self can be a very complicated and abstract topic so I won’t dive to deeply into it in this article but the true self is basically the person who is completely present in the moment. Its the person who can let go of the past, the future and does not seek any material wealth because he or she is happy with the person he or she is in the present moment. The enemy of the true self is the ego. This is the voice in your head that tricks you into thinking your happy when something amazing happens and you get a rush of adrenaline. For example, you win the lottery, or you get the most amazing gift ever or even if your favorite team wins the Superbowl. You get this rush of happiness. Unfortunately this rush never lasts. The problem is that your trying to find happiness through external means and this never works. The best way to connect with the true self is by living in the moment through meditation because this ultimately silences that voice in your head.
What Is The Authentic Self
I have spoken about the authentic self previously and its that person who fits the perfect mold in society. Its figuring out what you want to do with your life. Its growing your personality. Its being more confident, passionate, assertive, disciplined, and completely rounded in your values. The authentic person is that person who you will become when you have grown every area of your life. This is only achieved by leaving your comfort zone. Like I said before it takes a lot of courage to ditch the script and find where you fit in this life. Most people believe this script is their authentic self. This is the easy road. I challenge you to take the hard road of pushing your comfort zone and personal development. The greatest things that life has to offer is when you accomplish huge goals that you set for yourself and when you look back and you are a completely different person.
I know these concepts are a bit abstract as I merely wanted to introduce these topics to you. Most people don’t know what they want to do with their lives or even what kind of human being they want to become. As a result many people find that they are unfulfilled and unhappy when they get older. Finding yourself is a very interesting topic and I will definitely create future articles on these concepts to help you find your authentic self and your true self as we have only scratched the surface here.
Have a great day!
