“We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.
Stop Dwelling On The Past
We all have something in the past that we would like to forget. Something that hurt us, something that scared us or something we’ve always been worried about. If we’re always worried about these things and don’t learn how to control these emotions our past can worry us, make us negative and ultimately hurt us in our performance of our daily lives. So how do you stop dwelling on the past?
You Can Always Let Go of the Past
First of all, realize that it is possible and you can always let it go. No matter how tragic your past was it doesn’t define who you are today. The way you interpret the past does.
Realize that the past doesn’t exist anymore. It did exist but in this present moment, it does not exist. The only time the past exists is when you think about it, it creates negative thoughts and then it creates negative emotions that get brought up into the present.
The past, as well as the future, are just concepts. The only thing that’s actually real is right now. Reality is happening right now. If your present thoughts are about the past that is the only way to bring the past to the present. So your thoughts from the past are all conceptualizations and they don’t exist. So since you choose your own thoughts you can choose to not think about the past.
How Do You Let Go Of The Past
There are a few main ways in which you can do this that prove the most effective. The first one is meditation.
Meditation is great because it helps you find the present moment. The reason why your past has such a huge impact on your life is because your living in the past. What I mean by this is that you are constantly thinking about the past, these thoughts eventually become emotions that manifest into the present.
Through meditation, you realize that the past really doesn’t exist and you really can let go if you just focus on controlling your thoughts. By keeping your thoughts in the present moment all of a sudden the burden of your past is lifted because the present moment is really the only thing that exists. Past and future are just conceptualizations you create with your thoughts.
Most people reading this won’t meditate but if you really have been having trouble with your past I seriously urge you to at least try this for a month. I’ve posted an article on How to meditate properly before if you would like some useful tips.
You can start small with only about 5 minutes a day and build up from there. Before you start I want you to think of the moment in the past that you feel is affecting your life the most and when you begin meditating try to align your thoughts with the present moment.
Notice the feeling of your feet, the feeling of your hands and the feeling of your face. Notice the breaths you take. I want you to take all of this in – don’t think about it and just be in the moment. Feel what your body is feeling right now and take deep breaths.
It will take time but if done right you should notice that by just not thinking about it and not focusing on the past – all of a sudden you lift a huge burden off
Stop Being a Victim
One of the reasons why many people fail to let go of their past is because they feel like whatever happened was their fault. Maybe you did something and somebody was hurt – or even killed because of it. Now you have to live with that burden for the rest of your life. You feel stupid and if you forgive yourself you feel like you are robbing yourself of the punishment you deserve.
In this case, you are making yourself the victim. We are all made up of biological particles and at the most fundamental levels, we are all just unpredictable machines. We don’t even know if we have free will.
This is debated heavily but what we call free will can certainly just be a combination of your biology as well as your upbringing and if you took a twin and put him or her through the same life and influences he or she will make the same exact mistake you did.
So stop blaming yourself because it’s absolutely possible that anybody in your shoes would have done the exact same thing. You don’t have to live with regret as a way of punishing yourself for what you did. You can’t reach back into the past and change it. So instead of looking back look forward.
In reality, you do have full control of all your thoughts and you can let go whenever you want. Don’t use your past as an excuse for not being able to achieve your dreams and goals. This is the victim mindset.
By blaming things out of your control instead of taking full responsibility for who you are now you alleviate all responsibility and control over your own life. Don’t fall into this trap!
Worrying about your past does nothing but add pressure and stops you from getting complete fulfillment out of life. I hope you found some use in these tips.
Have a great day!
