Experiencing sadness and anger can make you feel more creative, and by being creative, you can get beyond your pain or negativity.
How to Stop Being Negative
We all get negative thoughts and that’s okay. The difference between negative people and positive people isn’t that positive people don’t have negative thoughts; it’s that positive people know how to deal with negative thoughts. As opposed to my other post How to Get Rid of Negative Thoughts. This post will give you more tangible ways on how to deal with negative thinking.
Create a Positivity List
We don’t realize it but our minds naturally focus on negative things – its human nature. As a result at the end of each day it is sometimes hard to get your mind off of what you did wrong throughout the day. Then you go to sleep and your negative thoughts become internalized into your subconscious during sleep.
I recommend that at the end of each day before you go to bed keep a notepad and a pen and write down 5 positive things you did today. It could be something your proud of, something you achieved or something small such as “I didn’t get emotional when that person cut me off.” Whatever it is the important thing is to end each day on a positive note. That way when you go to bed positive thoughts get internalized instead of negative thoughts. In addition throughout the day you will be looking for positive things because you will be thinking about what to write down on your list.
My personal 5 things I wrote down yesterday are:
- I went to MMA practice even though I didn’t feel like it.
- I missed my train today and wasn’t negative. Instead I just accepted the situation and caught the next one.
- I got caught in traffic on the way back from work and I didn’t get emotional.
- I had to wake up a little earlier today and woke up before my alarm clock.
- I wrote a new article today.
Take on the 7-Day Challenge
In Awaken the Great Within Tony Robbins mentions a 7-day positivity challenge. For 7 consecutive days you will not have any negative thoughts. If a negative thought pops into your mind, or if you are in a negative state, you must change that negative thought or state into a positive one. If after 5 minutes you feel you are still in a negative state you have failed the challenge and you have to start from day one.
I think this challenge is great because not only will you notice how many negative thoughts you have throughout the day but you will also focus on how to change them into positive thoughts. Most of the time when we get negative thoughts we just let them be until they go away by themselves, through rationalization or time. This challenge will help you deal with your negative thoughts and help you become a more positive person. Once you complete the challenge you can ramp it up by giving yourself only 3 minutes or 2 minutes to reframe that negative thought. Try it!
Burn Your Negative Thoughts
This method is something Bruce Lee used. Whenever Bruce Lee found that he was being overwhelmed by negative thinking he would imagine them written on a piece of paper and then in his mind he would burn it. This would help him distance himself from his negative thinking through his imagination.
Chuck Norris took this practice a step further. Instead of imagining his negative thoughts on a piece of paper he would physically write them down. Then he would rip it up and throw it out. In 2012 a Ohio State University study actually showed that the act of writing down your negative thoughts and then throwing them away actually helped reduce negative thinking. By throwing out your negative thoughts you are ‘tagging’ them in your mind as being in the trash. Writing your thoughts on a .txt document and putting it into the recycle bin on your computer also has the same effect.
My Challenge to You
For the next 7 days I want you to implement all 3 of these techniques. This is the same thing as the 7 day challenge but I also want you to keep a notepad by your bed and I also want you to throw away your negative thoughts. Try these techniques and notice the impact it has on your life.
Doing all 3 techniques will help you greatly in completing your 7 day challenge. It will also help you find new ideas to write down at the end of each night. All 3 of these techniques build off of one another so doing just one is actually a lot harder than doing all 3.
Have a great day!
This video is a bit long but negativity is quite a large subject. If you feel you are really negative and my article didn’t help you it might be worthwhile to watch this video through. Let me know what you think.
