How to Overcome Obstacles in Your Life
Today I want to talk about that defining moment. That moment in your life when you are working towards something and you hit that wall. You might start to realize that this wasn’t as easy as you thought it was. You expected results by now or maybe you feel like you’re just spinning your wheels and wasting your time. You hit this obstacle in your life and today I am going to give you a few ways on how to overcome these obstacles in your life.
What Separates Success from Failure
I believe what separates the people who are successful and from those who fail at something is the ability to re-frame these roadblocks. Whenever you start an endevour most people will start and they might say to themselves okay this isn’t going to be easy but I believe in myself, I have to do this – lets do this and they jump right in. This is a good mindset to have but when these people start to actually venture out of their comfort zone what they don’t expect is their brain actually working against them. Their brain creates all this fear and anxiety in them and they start to doubt their path. They begin to realize “Wow I didn’t expect to feel this way, this is a lot harder than I thought it would be.”
Your brain likes to stay in a comfort zone and keep a balance. When you try to disturb that balance by leaving your comfort zone or trying something new your brain will retaliate. That feeling of retaliation is often the first obstacle people need to overcome. At the beginning of your journey you logically say to yourself “Okay I can do this” but when your in this moment your brain goes from logical to emotional because it thinks its in trouble.
Whats actually amazing about the mind is that it will actually start generating valid excuses as to why you can’t do it.
“I’ve never done this before.”
“I don’t know enough.”
“There is too much to risk here.”
These excuses can be completely valid but you need to recognize that this is a normal process and in every project you will have these excuses. So realize yes, these excuses may be true (maybe not) but accept that you are willing to take this risk and if you listen to these excuses you will ultimately be stuck in a life you don’t want to life.
How to Re-Frame Obstacles
Realize that once you have these thoughts notice where you are. Tell yourself okay I am thinking about quitting. Like I said before everybody goes through this obstacle of self doubt. So tell yourself that if you overcome this obstacle, ignore the thoughts and do it anyway you are already ahead of most of your competition. This is an exciting realization and it should get you excited!
Another realization I want you to have is don’t take these thoughts as negative thoughts. They are just thoughts. They’re totally natural thoughts and in the process of any endevour this is something everyone goes through. In fact when you have these doubts and you do it anyway you become a stronger person. And i’m not just saying that just to inspire you. Studies have shown that you can actually build more willpower by overcoming obstacles. So instead of getting down on yourself look at your situation as a way to build willpower. This is a much more powerful mentality to have because it completely flips the situation. Instead of thinking your losing something you instead reframe it and think your gaining something. This positive mindset is really what separates the quitters from the winners and this is an important mindset to instill.
The reason why the most famous and rich people are where they are now is because they were willing to work through these obstacles. These obstacles get harder and harder but they filter more and more people. If you want to be the best at something then you need to learn to overcome these obstacles your mind creates for you. Remember that everybody’s mind creates similar, if not the same obstacles your brain creates and you are no different. But the people who keep going are the ones who are successful.
When you face these defining moments I want you to think back to where you started. I want you to think about your vision and why you started. If it’s worth it then you will keep going. If not you will believe in your excuses and you will quit.
Have a great day!
