“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.”
How To Get Rid Of Fear
We’ve all felt it. That gut wrenching, heart pounding, sweaty palm feeling. You begin to get tunnel vision and you can hardly catch your breath. It’s fear and its back for more. As I’ve mentioned in my negative thoughts article, fear is very similar to having negative thoughts. So everything in that previous article still applies here. You can say this is part II of that article. In this article, i’ll give you some good tips on how to overcome fear and to help you just do it!
Tip #1 Distance Yourself From Your Emotions
It’s important to first realize that fear is just an emotion. Like all emotions fear will come and go. This first tip requires some imagination and can be useful when what you fear is other people’s opinions of you – which is often the case. The next time you feel afraid try to imagine yourself as a bird flying overhead or as a third party person watching the events transpire. Unfortunately as humans we only have our one first-person perspective of things. Using this technique will allow you to see things from a different angle and help convince yourself that maybe you didn’t look like a complete idiot on stage as you previously thought. Note that this also works for other emotions other than fear. Just like your thoughts its important to realize that your emotions have no effect on your actions unless you let it.
Tip #2 Meditate
One of the primary benefits of meditation is allowing you to control your emotions. So if your feeling nervous get in a seated, comfortable position, close your eyes and breath in through the nose and out through the mouth. Concentrate on your breathing and make deep slow breaths. Remember that the goal of meditation is to not think about anything. Do it for 10 minutes and if done correctly I guarantee you will feel significantly less nervous. If you are at a social event where you can’t just sit down and start meditating without people wondering what the heck your doing then just do the breathing technique and concentrate on your slow breathing. This will get you out of your head and allow you to focus better on the task at hand.
Tip #3 Re-frame the Fear
First of all realize that feeling fear is okay. Not only is it okay but it’s a good thing! On the other side of fear is growth and this should get you excited. The man that has not lived a life of fear has not lived a life worth living. The fact that you are feeling fear means that you are growing as long as you take action despite that fear! So many people allow fear to stop them from what they truly want to get out of life because they see fear as an obstacle to overcome when in reality its an invitation to do it. Once you re-frame the fear from “I don’t want to do it because I’m afraid” to “I want to grow so I will do it because i’m afraid.” you become unstoppable. Trust me, whatever you are afraid of is never as bad as your brain makes it out to be. So the next time you’re afraid imagine the type of person you will become if you didn’t let fear stop you. Think about the goals you would achieve. Think about how you will look back on your life and realize that you have lived a life worth living. Remember to think about the positives not the negatives. Think about the benefits of succeeding not the negatives of failing.
